The track “Violet’s Song” was co-written by Jim Dolan (lead vocals/ guitar) and Marc Copely (guitar) and performed by JD & The Straight Shot. Dolan and Copely wrote the song from the perspective of the character, Violet Weston, played by Meryl Streep.
The soundtrack also features the film’s original score composed by Academy Award winner Gustavo Santolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel), as well music by Adam Taylor who scored major parts of the movie. Also included are songs by Eric Clapton, Bon Iver, Kings of Leon, John Fullbright, and Billy Squier, as well as actor Benedict Cumberbatch who performs a song on screen.
Dolan founded JD & The Straight Shot in 2000 with friends from the office. Although it began as a side project, JD & The Straight Shot has migrated in a new direction over the past several years – recording and touring heavily to promote their new unique sound and entirely new lineup of New York City’s finest musicians. Relix Magazine explains, “JD & The Straight Shot is more than a businessman’s vanity project – it’s a legitimate band that continues to evolve.”
The band’s creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), this duo pens the band’s music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensible is keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm) who also adds harmonica and accordion to the sonic stew and newest addition to the lineup, guitarist Aidan Dolan. Rounding out the band are some of pop music’s finest session players, drummer Shawn Pelton (Rod Stewart, Pink, Daryl Hall, Buddy Guy), bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Lorenza Ponce (Sheryl Crow, Ben Folds, Bon Jovi).
In addition to their impressive studio releases, JD & The Straight Shot have developed a reputation for their live touring show as well, opening for the Eagles for dozens of arena shows, most recently on their acclaimed “History of the Eagles Tour.” The band has also opened for Eagles members Joe Walsh and Don Henley as well as ZZ Top, Willie Nelson, The Allman Brothers Band, Robert Randolph and more.
With the release of their fourth studio album in 2012, JD & The Straight Shot showcase their signature bluesy sound while incorporating distinct New Orleans root influence. The album, Midnight Run, was produced by Kevin Killen (U2, Peter Gabriel) at New York’s famed Avatar Studios. JD & The Straight Shot are currently working on their fifth studio album for release in Spring 2014.
